Margaret Mead, anthropologist and prolific writer commented: “A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” I have loved this quote for some time and absolutely believe that she was right.
We hear the stories all the time of a few people uniting in one cause and making a difference. I personally have seen this truth played out over and over again in my own life. My point is that it doesn’t take an army to bring about change. And as you set out to help someone, or affect change you might be surprised at how much you enjoy it. As you think about your plans for the new year, are you thinking about what you can do for or with your community? Many of us have formed new friendships and connected to new communities in 2009. Have you given any thought as to what you can do to improve those communities? Do you have any ideas about how you can make things better or different? Or is there something you’ve been trying to do but just can’t seem to complete it? If you had an extra set of hands could you do it?
I’m full of questions today because I think it’s important that we take some time to consider what it is that we can do to help our virtual, local or even global communities. Over that last week, I’ve seen lots of posts and news stories on the biggest _______ (you fill in the blank) of the decade. That next big thing could be an idea you are currently considering and it could become reality in this next year. The only way to accomplish it could be by working together.
I’m sure greater things are yet to come and that together we can make them a reality. So…what’s keeping you, let’s get to it!
