People really do matter to Chris Brogan

by Robyn on September 27, 2009

Chris Brogan and Me at New Media Atlanta 2009Project Authenticity is really important to me and I have a deep desire to connect you to people and brands that are uniquely and genuinely authentic. The kind of people, that when you meet them your interaction is like a drink of water. I was asked recently where did you get the idea  for this blog and the fact is it’s been brewing for about a year, but I think the seed was first planted after reading Chris Brogan’s post titled Passion Drives Personal Brand.  In that post he wrote: Authenticity matters. It matters a lot to me as well and after this week I can tell you that I know for sure, it matters to Chris.

I had the unique opportunity to connect 1:1 with Chris this week at New Media Atlanta. My first conversation was one I thought would be short and sweet. He and I were at the same dinner, but at different tables. As folks started to dwindle, I saw a seat open right next to him, so I walked over to introduce myself. I had no agenda I just wanted to connect.  I wanted him to know that he inspired the vision for this blog, that I’d read Trust Agents and many times I found myself saying: you are so right! I wanted him to somehow know that I’m not a fan, I’m a believer.

That’s not how the conversation unfolded. We talked about a couple things and then he casually mentioned that he was still thinking about what he might write on his blog Thursday night/Friday morning.  I actually said: I know what you should write about…uh oh did I just tell Chris what to write about? When I said that, he leaned in…looked me in the eye and said: what? Before I knew it I was asking him to write about community. And he did….Feeling the community.

Here’s what I want you to know about my friend Chris Brogan….he’s more than a social media rock star.  He’s authentic, gracious, sharp-witted, smart and deeply committed to inspiring people to stop broadcasting and start connecting. I can tell you he loves his family very much so he’s not spending all this time away from them to gain popularity. Chris knows that change begins within and social media is a powerful vehicle to exact change. It’s not social media that will change the world and build community it’s people and how they make use of it. Chris has said many times: people matter…and he means it.

The rest of the story….

I saw Chris the next day, across a crowded room and I smiled at him and nodded. He made his way over and sat down. The first words out of his mouth were: how are you today? Not: did you see my post?

So…if you’re thinking about getting Chris and Julien Smith’s book Trust Agents please go and purchase it. Get the book because you want to to know how to make trust moves consistently, you want to be inspired and inspire others to be authentic and transparent, you believe communities are important. Someone once said to me that in order for a community to be successful, there has to be a tie that binds….get the book because you want to be a part of a community where the tie that binds is people matter. I’m asking you to get the book because I want to know more people like Chris…there’s not enough of them.

What a GREAT post! I’ve been following Chris’s blog for only a couple of months and I, too, read Trust Agents. One crucial element that attracted me to his writing was his sincerity and authenticity. Not to mention he was empowering me with tools and insight to accomplish something that I’m passionate about. His work isn’t taken for granted and I hope his family is just as understanding of his passion as I am appreciative of it. Thanks for sharing!

Great post! This makes me wish even more that I had attended Chris’ event in Nashville last week. I wasn’t able to make it, but I watched the live feed online. Many people have gushed similarly about their experiences. Authenticity is great and it’s especially amazing when you find it in someone who has such notoriety. That’s rare. Unfortunately, fame tends to change people. It seems Chris has not succumbed to that. Glad to hear it!

This is a great story – I also really enjoyed Trust Agents and Chris’s work in general.

Is it true he is 12 feet tall.

I agree a 100%. I am so new to Twitter and social media when I saw the chance to go to his event in Nashville. At the first break Chris wandered over and we chatted for a minute. My first name is far from common but a few minutes into his presentation he referred to me by name and my business. After the event when I got to him to sign my book, he made a reference to something I mentioned about my wife and we had talked for less than 2 minutes. people like Chris are rare in our society and I am so glad to have met him.

Great Post! Chris Brogan is inspiring and authentic, but so are you. Your ability to write passionately about what you believe in is evident. As we continue to build our community, we need to trust and inspire each other. Building authentic relationships without outside influences makes them more valuable and sustainable. Your post motivates me to continue doing this and inspiring others to do the same. I look forward to reading more.

Nay sayers will harp on the fact that “social” connecting online isn’t “real,” and that those of us spending time on Twitter or blogging are wasting efforts when we could be “really” connecting. I think your post is a great reminder of how authentic social networking can be. It has the power to inspire, which leads to the power to inspire others.
This is also a great reminder of the power of meeting in person to bring relationships begun online to a new level. Thanks for sharing and nice to see you at NMATL!

    Robyn,

Beautifully written post expressing my thoughts exactly.

You are a very thoughtful, reflective soul (and I say this from our personal interaction at #nmatl as well as your writing). Your spirit exudes the same admirable qualities you describe in Chris. You and Chris both inspire others you touch through your sincerity, your care and concern for others and your authentic, open expression of what’s on your heart and mind. I love that about both you and Chris – two people who inspired me at #nmatl just by being who they are.

Love your writing…love your vision…love your spirit. Keep pouring yourself out – it makes a difference. :)

Sending you a big bear hug of appreciation, encouragement and love!

As a relatively new user of social media (with many thanks to Robyn, by the way!), I am so excited to learn more about Chris Brogan and his passion for authenticity. What is most significant, and so refreshing to see, is that Chris clearly “gets it” and practices what he preaches – being real, and truly connecting with people and creating community in a beautiful and meaningful way. I know that this is your passion, too, Robyn, and it’s irresistible as I watch it come to fruition on the vine of social media.

Robyn, you’ve put great words around what I, too, see in Chris Brogan. I spent some time with him yesterday and experienced nothing but a real human being. Thanks for your blog topic, too, as I am a foot soldier for all of us who want authenticity in relationships, business and marketing. Keep up the good work.

    Hey Miriam
As you know so well, social connecting is very real and important…after all we first met online.
I so appreciate your comments, and totally agree that the connections we build online are definitely what
we make them. Social media is a powerful tool but how we use it that makes the difference.

Great post Robyn! I had a very similar experience with Chris a couple of years ago at Gnomedex. He has had a smile on his face every time I have seen him since and I have witnessed him acting exactly the same way dozens of times at conferences the last couple of years.

He is a genuinely nice guy and likes people. That’s why his message resonates so strongly.

Kudos to you for approaching him and not being star struck =p. Chris talks about that in his book. People are just people. Treat them that way and you will go far.

    Robyn this is awesome.
Clear, just the right length, evocative, and heartfelt.

I got the “he’s real” sense from Chris reading a post of his last year saying, essentially, “just talk to me if you run into me, I’m no different from anyone else,” and seeing him tweet one time “I’m at this spot in this restaurant, come on by.”

Hoping to meet him Tuesday here in SoCal and reading the book tonight!

Looking forward to following you on Twitter and thanks again for this.
